Starz has announced the cancellation of The Serpent Queen after its second season. However, the network is developing a spinoff series focused on Queen Elizabeth I, continuing its collaboration with executive producers Erwin Stoff and Justin Haythe.
Set in the 1500s, The Serpent Queen starred Samantha Morton as Catherine de’ Medici, the Queen of France. The series followed her as she navigated political challenges to rule the country for 30 years.
While no casting details for the Queen Elizabeth spinoff have been revealed, Minnie Driver guest-starred as the British monarch in Season 2 of The Serpent Queen.
Based on Leonie Frieda’s book Catherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of France, the show featured a unique storytelling style that included fourth-wall breaks and contemporary music. The second season concluded with the St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre in 1572, which resulted in thousands of deaths.
The Serpent Queen was produced by 3 Arts Entertainment and Lionsgate Television, with additional executive producers including Stacie Passon and Francis Lawrence. The series received generally positive reviews, with Variety noting that it successfully highlighted a fascinating historical figure.
The show’s first season premiered in September 2022 and was renewed for a second season shortly after. However, Season 2 did not debut until July 2023, and the cancellation leaves the series with a total of 16 episodes.
Fans have expressed disappointment over the cancellation, particularly due to unresolved storylines from the finale. Many are curious about the upcoming spinoff featuring Driver’s portrayal of Queen Elizabeth I.
Despite its end, both seasons of The Serpent Queen remain available for viewing on Starz.
