The adult animated series Velma has been canceled after two seasons on Max. The show, which starred Mindy Kaling, was based on the popular Scooby-Doo character and served as a prequel, featuring Velma and her friends as high school students solving mysteries in Crystal Cove.
Season 2 premiered in April and included a voice cast of notable actors such as Glenn Howerton, Sam Richardson, Constance Wu, and Jane Lynch. The series aimed to modernize the classic characters with a mix of humor and drama.
In a statement, Max praised Kaling and executive producer Charlie Grandy for creating a unique world within the Scooby-Doo franchise.
“While we won’t be moving forward with another season, we thank them for their compelling storytelling and humor,” the network said.
Despite its cancellation, Velma released a Halloween special titled Velma: This Halloween Needs to Be More Special! on October 3. The special follows Velma and her friends as they race against time to find a spellbook that could bring her back from the dead while avoiding a vengeful spirit.
The first season of Velma received mixed reviews, holding a 38% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics pointed out that the characters were often unlikable, with one reviewer stating that Velma’s selfishness overshadowed her moments of vulnerability.
The show’s development team included executive producers Kaling, Grandy, Howard Klein, and Elijah Aron. Jessica Kumai Scott served as co-executive producer, while Amy Winfrey was the supervising producer.
Though Velma has ended, fans can still enjoy the recently released Halloween special, which features familiar characters in new storylines. The special adds to the show’s legacy while leaving some unresolved threads from the series finale.
