Chad A. Verdi of Verdi Productions, along with Anthony Gudas and Aaron Kaufman from Public School Productions, has teamed up with producers John Scalise, Keanu Reeves, and Fisher Stevens to create a documentary titled “The Jet.” This film will explore the life of kickboxing legend Benny “The Jet” Urquidez.
Currently in production under the direction of Jennifer Tiexiera, the project will see Verdi, Gudas, and Kaufman joining forces with Reeves, Maura Anderson, Zak Kilberg, and Scalise as producers. Urquidez is celebrated for his significant impact on martial arts in popular culture, not only as a fighter but also as an actor and fight coordinator.
He boasts six world titles across five weight divisions and maintained an undefeated record throughout his extensive kickboxing career.
Urquidez has also made notable contributions to martial arts cinema, featuring in several action films during the 1980s and 1990s. His film credits include titles such as “The Octagon,” “Road House,” and “Grosse Pointe Blank.” Throughout his career, he has trained numerous celebrities, including Jackie Chan, Muhammad Ali, Elvis Presley, and Nicole Kidman.
Verdi expressed enthusiasm about the new project: “Having just completed filming in Italy on Martin Scorsese’s documentary ‘Shipwrecks of Sicily,’ we are excited to begin another documentary. We look forward to working with Johnny, Keanu, Fisher, and Jennifer in Rhode Island during the fourth quarter of 2024.”
Scalise added, “We are honored to have Verdi Productions join us in telling the incredible story of an icon who connected Hollywood with martial arts. Benny is a unique figure who has inspired many people from various backgrounds. The support from so many remarkable individuals is inspiring as we bring this project to life.”
Filming is set to start in Rhode Island in November. Executive producers for the documentary include Michelle Verdi, Chad Verdi Jr., Paul Luba, Sera Verdi from Verdi Productions, along with Nancy Weisler, Brian Maya, Chris Quintos Cathcart, and Tyler Boehm. The documentary is expected to be released in 2025.
