Jesse L. Martin, who stars as Alec Mercer in NBC’s “The Irrational,” has teased a potential musical moment in the show’s second season, which premiered on October 8.
Martin, a Broadway veteran known for his role as Tom Collins in “Rent,” hinted that his character, a behavioral scientist and FBI consultant, may showcase his singing talent in an upcoming episode. He shared, “People know about my love for Broadway and my experience with musicals.” He added that Alec has a backstory involving a college singing group, but as an adult, he doesn’t see himself performing publicly.
“There may be a chance for those interested to hear some singing from a scientist,” Martin said, leaving fans curious about how this will unfold.
In addition to the musical element, Alec’s personal life will continue to intertwine with his professional responsibilities. He faces challenges due to his relationships with significant women in his life, including Rose (played by Karen David) and his ex-girlfriend Marisa (Maahra Hill). Martin noted that while there won’t be a love triangle, their stories will remain connected.
Phoebe (Molly Kunz) is another key character in Alec’s life. Martin emphasized her importance, stating, “Phoebe’s not going anywhere. She is a valuable character and brings emotional depth to the story.”
“The Irrational,” produced by Universal TV, airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET on NBC.
