Paramount’s Republic Pictures has secured global rights to “Getaway,” the directorial debut of Jason Biggs, known for his role in “American Pie.” This action-comedy also features Biggs in the lead role.
The film follows Kevin Stanwell, a husband who attempts to save his troubled marriage by staging a home invasion during a romantic getaway with his wife, Suzie. However, things take a chaotic turn when the plan goes awry. The cast includes Meaghan Rath from “Hawaii Five-0,” Arturo Castro from “Broad City,” Justin H. Min from “The Umbrella Academy,” and Anna Konkle from “PEN15.”
Currently in post-production, “Getaway” was penned by Jamie Napoli and Joshua Paul Johnson. It is produced by Brad Krevoy, CEO of Motion Picture Corporation of America, along with Charles Cohen, Jimmy Philémond-Montout, and David Anselmo. Amy Krell serves as the executive producer.
This acquisition is part of Republic Pictures’ recent efforts to expand its slate. The label recently showcased “September 5,” a thriller about the 1972 Olympics hostage crisis, at the Zurich Film Festival.
Paramount will release this film in limited theaters on November 29, with a wider rollout on December 13.
Republic Pictures aims to acquire six to seven features annually, focusing on festival-bound films. Recently, they also acquired worldwide rights to Edward Burns’ “Millers in Marriage,” featuring a star-studded cast including Patrick Wilson and Minnie Driver. Other notable acquisitions include Saoirse Ronan’s upcoming film “Bad Apples” and James Sweeney’s comedy “Twinless.”
The revival of Republic Pictures earlier this year aims to enhance Paramount’s feature film acquisitions under Dan Cohen’s leadership. The label seeks to carve out a niche in the competitive film market while continuing to build its portfolio with diverse projects.
