In the picturesque city of Turin, Italy, the View Conference is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Originally a local event called Virtuality, it has transformed into a weeklong gathering that attracts entertainment professionals from around the globe. Attendees participate in talks, workshops, and masterclasses while enjoying the local culture and cuisine.
Maria Elena Gutierrez, the conference director, emphasizes the sense of community that draws people to the event. “It’s the place where people want to be,” she states. “People network and build relationships.
There’s a certain kind of magic, and it’s not just because we’re in Italy.” The conference began with funding from the European Union to establish a Technology Park that included a school and post-production studio. Gutierrez took charge in 2005, aiming to broaden its scope. She renamed it to reflect its international focus, creating the acronym VIEW: Virtual Interactive Emerging World.
Over the years, View Conference has attracted numerous Oscar winners and nominees. Many return annually due to the welcoming atmosphere and strong community ties.
Gutierrez notes that attendees often describe it as their favorite conference. “The speakers go to each other’s talks,” she explains. “They spend hours refining their presentations based on what they learn from one another. It’s like a retreat.”
Initially struggling to attract big names, the conference now boasts a packed program. “I regularly receive calls from filmmakers eager to present their latest projects,” Gutierrez reveals. “When they come to Turin, they often stay for the entire week, which is remarkable considering how precious their time is.” This year’s lineup includes prominent figures such as Chris Sanders, director of DreamWorks Animation’s “The Wild Robot”; Jonathan Nolan from Amazon MGM Studios; and Fede Álvarez, director of “Alien: Romulus.”
Additionally, Ramsey Naito from Nickelodeon Animation will receive the View’s Visionary Award.
As it marks this milestone year, the View Conference continues to be a vital platform for industry leaders and aspiring talents alike, fostering collaboration and innovation in digital media.
