Oscar-winning actress and filmmaker Jodie Foster is set to star in the French film Vie Privée, directed by Rebecca Zlotowski. The film is currently being shot in France and will follow Zlotowski’s previous work, Other People’s Children, which was featured at the Venice Film Festival in 2022.
Vie Privée also stars Daniel Auteuil from La Belle Époque. The screenplay is co-written by Zlotowski, renowned French novelist Anne Berest, and Gaëlle Macé. Zlotowski and Macé previously collaborated on the script for Grand Central. The film is being produced by Frederic Jouve at Les Films Velvet in Paris.
Foster, who last appeared in True Detective: Night Country, is known for her selective choice of roles. Her collaboration with Zlotowski appears to be a strong fit, as both are drawn to complex dramas featuring multi-dimensional characters, particularly female leads.
Zlotowski has a notable filmography, including Une fille facile, which premiered at Cannes’ Directors Fortnight in 2019, and Planetarium, starring Natalie Portman and Lily-Rose Depp.
This will not be Foster’s first experience with French cinema. She made her debut in French films at age 14 in Fleur Bleu and worked with director Claude Chabrol on the 1984 film The Blood of Others. Chabrol praised her intelligence and technical knowledge of filmmaking.
Foster is fluent in French, a skill she has often credited to her mother, a francophile who introduced her to New Wave cinema. Foster has cited classic French films like François Truffaut’s The 400 Blows as significant influences on her career.
Beloved in France, Foster delivered a heartfelt speech during the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of Paris’s liberation from German occupation this August, alongside President Emmanuel Macron. She also presided over the César Awards in 2011 and received an Honorary Palme d’Or at Cannes in 2021.
