Andrew Garfield recently shared his thoughts on returning to the role of Spider-Man in Spider-Man: No Way Home, describing the experience as “really healing.” Initially hesitant about rejoining the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Garfield found the filming process to be deeply meaningful.
In an interview with Esquire, Garfield reflected on his time on set for the 2021 blockbuster. He spoke about feeling no nervousness among the cast, attributing this to director Jon Watts’s calm confidence. “I was like, ‘Okay, he’s chilling; that’s interesting,’” Garfield recalled. Watts’s approach instilled a sense of faith in the cast, making them feel secure.
Before filming began, Garfield had several discussions with Watts about his character’s direction. He emphasized that he wanted the film to be fun, healing, and significant.
“There’s got to be a real reason why we’re all in this same multiverse,” he noted, expressing a desire for a sense of destiny among the three Spider-Men. The entire team, including Watts and co-stars Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire, agreed with this vision.
The pivotal moment that convinced Garfield to join the film was a scene where his character catches MJ as she falls. This scene felt like a redemption arc for his Spider-Man, who had previously failed to save Gwen Stacy in his own universe. “The only thing that was set for my character was that I was going to catch MJ, and that’s what sold me on it,” he explained.
Garfield is set to star alongside Florence Pugh in John Crowley’s upcoming romance-drama We Live in Time, which will premiere in select theaters on October 11 and nationwide on October 18.
