Julia Roberts made headlines this week as she campaigned for Vice President Kamala Harris in her home state of Georgia, a key battleground in the upcoming 2024 election. At a rally in Canton, Roberts spoke passionately about reproductive rights, emphasizing the importance of voter engagement.
The Oscar-winning actress, who endorsed Harris last month, addressed supporters at a rally on Wednesday. She urged attendees to encourage more male voters to participate in the campaign. Roberts also spoke at an event in Atlanta on Thursday.
“I believe in Georgia. I wouldn’t have come home if I didn’t believe we can achieve great goals that extend beyond our state’s borders,” Roberts said during her speech in Canton. She encouraged women to engage the men in their lives who were not present at the rally. “And all you brave men here tonight, talk to all the other men who aren’t here tonight,” she added.
Roberts was joined by former Georgia state Representative Stacey Abrams at the event. She urged everyone to discuss the election with friends and family, regardless of their political affiliations. “Maybe they don’t understand things quite the way you do,” she noted. “Bring them into a conversation. Make sure they’re registered to vote—even if they’re not voting for the person you think they should.”
Earlier this week, Roberts’ campaign announced that she would headline five events across Georgia on Wednesday and Thursday. At the Atlanta rally, she was joined by Doug Emhoff, the second gentleman of the United States, along with Senator Raphael Warnock and Abrams.
Roberts emphasized the need for dialogue among differing viewpoints. “Talk to those who don’t share your beliefs and gently help them see our perspective,” she said. “Some people just don’t understand yet, but we can help them get there.”
As a longtime supporter of the Democratic Party, Roberts has previously endorsed Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden. She has been actively involved in Harris’ campaign, participating in discussions led by Oprah Winfrey last month.
Roberts expressed pride that her 19-year-old twins, Hazel and Phinnaeus, will be voting for Harris for the first time on November 5.
Despite her strong ties to Harris and the Democratic Party, Roberts shared that her parents were activists who encouraged her to engage in conversations with people holding different views.
“Let’s start talking to everyone about what this election means for our country,” she urged attendees. “This is the United States of America, and we’ve been lacking in unity for too long.”
Roberts concluded her speech with a call for change: “Enough with the fighting! Let’s focus on coming together, repairing what’s broken, and working towards a brighter future.”
As early voting in Georgia begins next week, Roberts’ efforts highlight the critical role celebrities can play in mobilizing voters and addressing important issues like reproductive rights.
