Filmmaker Gil Kenan has exciting plans for the future of the Ghostbusters franchise, hinting at more projects on the horizon. The beloved series has entertained audiences for decades, although recent films have received mixed reviews.
In a recent interview with The Direct, Kenan, who directed “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” expressed his enthusiasm for continuing the franchise. “We definitely are continuing the conversation of telling big Ghostbuster stories on the big screen,” he stated. He emphasized that he and Jason Reitman, who is involved in a Netflix animated project, are committed to keeping the “flame of Ghostbusters” alive for years to come.
Kenan teased details about the upcoming animated series, suggesting it will explore various beloved Ghostbusters stories. He is actively engaged in this Netflix project and is eager about its potential. Reitman is reportedly overseeing the animated series daily to ensure it remains both thrilling and enjoyable.
Following the lukewarm reception of 2016’s “Ghostbusters: Answer the Call,” Sony returned to its roots by reuniting the original cast from the 1980s films. After the passing of Ivan Reitman, who directed the first two films, his son Jason took over after Paul Feig’s project did not meet expectations. Jason brought back familiar characters and elements from the classic movies while also developing new storylines connected to the Spengler family.
“Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” released on March 22 this year, has already grossed over $200 million, indicating a strong audience interest in continuing this iconic franchise.
