Thomson, GA (WJBF) – The 4th Annual Will Smith Memorial Rodeo took place in Thomson on Friday and Saturday. This event was created by Chris and Kristy Smith to honor their son, Will, who was dedicated to helping youth in the community.
“Our son Will was on the Board of Directors and played a key role in reaching out to teenagers. He tragically lost his life in a car accident. We decided to hold this rodeo as a memorial for him and as a fundraiser for our youth outreach program,” Chris Smith explained.
The rodeo attracted over 4,000 cowboys and cowgirls of all ages who came for food, music, and, of course, rodeo events. “This is an IPRA (International Pro Rodeo Association) Rodeo,” Smith said. “Contestants from all over the country are here to compete for prize money and points toward the finals in Oklahoma City.”
Smith expressed gratitude for the opportunity to continue his son’s legacy through this event. “It’s amazing to keep impacting people’s lives while hosting a great outdoor event. The weather has been beautiful this weekend,” he said.
This year, the Smiths chose to make the rodeo a community event, free of charge, in light of the damage caused by Hurricane Helene. “Many people lost food from their freezers and had to spend extra money due to the storm. We decided to open the gates and let everyone come without an admission fee,” Chris Smith added.
The rodeo not only honors Will’s memory but also serves as a way to support the community during difficult times.
