Russell T. Davies, the showrunner of Doctor Who, has provided exciting updates about an upcoming spin-off series and the much-anticipated Christmas special episode. Fans can look forward to the return of a familiar adversary—the Sea Devils.
According to Davies, the spin-off mini-series, titled The War Between the Land and the Sea, will reintroduce the Sea Devils. These classic villains last appeared alongside Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor in the episode “Doctor Who and the Sea Devils.”
The cast for the spin-off series has already been announced. It includes Jemma Redgrave, Russell Tovey, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Alexander Devrient, and Ruth Madeley, along with Vincent Franklin, known for his role in Gentleman Jack. More cast members are expected to be revealed soon.
The official synopsis describes a thrilling plot: “When a fearsome and ancient species emerges from the ocean, dramatically revealing itself to humanity, an international crisis is triggered. With the entire population at risk, UNIT steps into action as the land and sea wage war.”
In an interview with an entertainment outlet, Davies shared that production is well underway, with the cast and crew entering their third week of filming. He explained, “Normally, five episodes would be broken down into two or three blocks, filmed roughly in order… But this is all one big block, so an actor could appear for the first time in the very last scene of the very last episode (and indeed, someone does), but we could need them to shoot tomorrow.”
Davies aims to complete filming by the end of the year, potentially around Christmas. In addition to the spin-off, Doctor Who fans can also expect Ncuti Gatwa to reprise his role as the Fifteenth Doctor in a special Christmas episode, joined by Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan.
The main series, Doctor Who Season 2, is set to stream on Disney+ in 2025, while the spin-off mini-series is expected to debut by late 2025 or mid-2026. Fans of the franchise have plenty to look forward to as the universe continues to expand with new stories and returning characters.
