Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson are set to star as a married couple in the upcoming musical drama Song Sung Blue, directed by Craig Brewer. The film centers around the couple forming a Neil Diamond tribute band.
Production for the film, a collaboration between Focus Features and Davis Entertainment, began on October 14. The cast also includes Michael Imperioli, Fisher Stevens, Jim Belushi, and newcomers Ella Anderson, King Princess, Mustafa Shakir, and Hudson Hilbert Hensley.
Song Sung Blue is inspired by Greg Kohs’ 2008 documentary of the same name. It tells the true story of Milwaukee couple Mike and Claire Sardina, struggling musicians who gained local fame as the tribute act “Lightning & Thunder.” The film takes its title from a 1972 song by Neil Diamond.
The film is produced by Brewer along with John Davis and John Fox from Davis Entertainment. Erika Hampson and Kohs will serve as executive producers. Focus Features developed the project and holds worldwide distribution rights, while Universal Pictures International will manage international distribution.
Both Jackman and Hudson have been showcasing their musical talents recently. Jackman, known for his roles in Deadpool and Wolverine, recently announced a 12-concert residency at Radio City Music Hall, where he will perform songs from The Boy From Oz, The Greatest Showman, and The Music Man. Meanwhile, Hudson signed with Virgin Records this year and is preparing to release her debut album Glorious, demonstrating her capability as a star, not just a supporting character, as noted by Variety’s Chris Willman.
Focus Features’ upcoming projects also include the Pharrell Williams LEGO biopic Piece by Piece, Robert Eggers’ reimagining of Nosferatu, and Edward Berger’s thriller Conclave.
