Anchor Bay Entertainment has secured global rights to the comedy film Sour Party, which is co-written, directed, and produced by the married team of Amanda and Michael Drexton. The Drextons describe the film as “a love-hate letter to Los Angeles” and a semi-autobiographical look at the worst parts of ourselves, told through the eyes of two self-absorbed thirty-somethings.
The film stars Samantha Westervelt, who is also a co-writer, alongside Reggie Watts from Pitch Perfect 2, Corey Feldman of Stand By Me fame, and Augie Duke from Mayans M.C. The story follows two broke women, Gwen (Westervelt) and James (Amanda), in their thirties as they try to raise money from struggling, wannabe artists. Their goal is to buy an expensive gift for a baby shower for Gwen’s sister. The Drextons describe the film as “a feminist take on the traditional, male-dominated buddy comedy.”
Thomas Zambeck, one of the founders of Anchor Bay, praised Sour Party, saying, “When we first saw it, we were impressed by its fresh perspective. The Drextons have created a smart and satirical farce that is both hilarious and relatable. We’re excited to share this film with audiences and add another classic to our lineup of irreverent comedies.”
The film was executive produced by cinematographer Steven Moreno, known for his work on Better Off Zed and Panic.
Sour Party premiered in 2023 at the Sydney Underground Festival and won the Audience Award for Best Feature at the 2023 Chattanooga Film Festival.
The revived Anchor Bay is led by Starz Distribution co-founders Thomas Zambeck and Brian Katz, who negotiated the deal on behalf of the filmmakers.
