The first American Film Convention (AFC) has announced that 30 feature and short films will be screened during its three-day event from October 15 to 17 at Magic Box, The Reef in downtown Los Angeles.
These films will be part of a larger gathering that includes 70 exhibitors and over 70 speakers participating in 50 panels, which were announced earlier in September.
“After months of careful planning, we’re excited to welcome the industry to this dynamic event,” said Mitesh Patel, CEO of AFC. “Our film program features an outstanding selection of genres, from drama to documentary and from heartwarming stories to horror, providing something for every potential distributor.”
Among the films set to screen are “Circumcision” by Yuri Zeltser, “Clown & Out” by Sergio Guerrero Garzafox, “Paper Flowers” by Mahesh Pailoor, “We’re Not Married?” by Cynthia Garcia Williams, “Without a Name” by Emmett Charles Loverde, and “The World’s Happiest Man” by Binod Paudel.
ASC Announces Winners of 2024 Student Heritage Awards
The American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) has revealed the winners of the 2024 Student Heritage Awards competition.
Ellen Kuras, ASC, presented the John Bailey Heritage Award (Graduate Category) to Joewi Verhoeven from the American Film Institute for his film “Taha.” Michael Goi, ASC, ISC, awarded the George Spiro Dibie Heritage Award (Undergraduate Category) to Isabelle Leonard from the University of Southern California for “Amos’ Bride.” Additionally, Patrick Cady, ASC, presented The Haskell Wexler Documentary Award to Meg Weck, also from USC, for her film “Danceable.”

Ukrainian Cultural Film Festival Announces Lineup
The Ukrainian Cultural Film Festival (UCF) is returning for its second year, co-presented by Razom for Ukraine, led by Polina Buchak, head of its cinema department, and the Ukrainian Institute in Kyiv. This year’s event runs from October 15 to 31 in New York and is produced in collaboration with partners such as the Kyiv International Shorts Film Festival (KISFF) and the Linoleum Animation Festival.
The festival will showcase over 15 short films that highlight unique Ukrainian experiences. Notable screenings include “‘Slovo’ House: Unfinished Novel,” which tells the story of Ukrainian writers at the Slovo cooperative house in Kharkiv in 1927 during the Executed Renaissance, screening on October 16. “Porcelain War,” which won the 2024 U.S. Grand Jury Prize for Documentary at the Sundance Film Festival, will be shown on October 22. Additionally, “La Palisiada,” Ukraine’s entry for the 2025 Academy Awards in the Narrative Feature category, will screen on October 24.
