Japanese entertainment giant Toho has officially acquired GKIDS, a prominent North American animation distributor. This acquisition will make GKIDS a wholly-owned subsidiary of Toho International, based in Los Angeles.
Eric Beckman, the founder of GKIDS, will continue as CEO, while Dave Jesteadt will remain in his role as president. Both have led the company since 2009, when they released the Oscar-nominated film “The Secret of Kells.” Under their leadership, GKIDS has earned 13 Academy Award nominations for Best Animated Feature, including this year’s winner, Hayao Miyazaki’s “The Boy and the Heron.”
Toho President and CEO Hiro Matsuoka praised GKIDS for its unique position in the U.S. market, stating that the partnership aligns perfectly with Toho’s strategic goals. He emphasized that this acquisition will help Toho prioritize animation and expand its international market presence while delivering exceptional Japanese content to global audiences.
The acquisition also enhances Toho’s growth strategy beyond Japan.
Toho aims to connect Japanese and international creators with fans worldwide. The company has previously collaborated with GKIDS on successful projects like “Weathering With You” and “Spirited Away: Live on Stage.”
With this deal, Toho gains a well-established distribution network in North America, complementing its existing operations in licensing and merchandising. Meanwhile, GKIDS will benefit from the resources and capabilities of its new parent company while maintaining its distinct brand and management team.
Beckman and Jesteadt expressed their excitement about the acquisition, assuring filmmakers, partners, and fans that GKIDS will continue to operate with the same passion and mission. They look forward to bringing more exceptional films to audiences in North America and beyond.
Nomura Securities Co., Ltd. served as Toho’s exclusive financial advisor, while ACF Investment Bank acted as financial advisor for GKIDS. Legal counsel was provided by Nishimura & Asahi for Toho and Sheppard Mullin Richter & Hampton LLP for GKIDS.
