Apple has officially renewed the comedic spy drama Slow Horses for a sixth season. This announcement follows the release of the fourth season finale on October 9 and the earlier confirmation of a fifth season.
The upcoming fifth season will pick up after the dramatic events of season four, where the Slow Horses, led by Gary Oldman as Jackson Lamb, find themselves embroiled in a dangerous game of revenge orchestrated by Diana Taverner, played by Kristin Scott Thomas.
Slow Horses is based on Mick Herron’s Slough House series, which features a team of British intelligence agents assigned to a neglected department within MI5 known as Slough House. The show boasts a talented ensemble cast that includes Jack Lowden, Saskia Reeves, Rosalind Eleazar, Christopher Chung, Samuel West, Aimee-Ffion Edwards, Ruth Bradley, Tom Brooke, Joanna Scanlan, and Jonathan Pryce. In season four, Hugo Weaving joined the cast as an antagonist.
Jay Hunt, Apple’s creative director for Europe, expressed enthusiasm about the renewal, stating, “Audiences around the world have fallen in love with the Slow Horses, and I’m delighted that Gary Oldman will be leading this star-studded cast on another acerbic and action-packed adventure.”
The series is produced by See-Saw Films and has several executive producers, including Jamie Laurenson, Hakan Kousetta, Julian Stevens, Iain Canning, Emile Sherman, Adam Randall, Gail Mutrux, Douglas Urbanski, and Oldman. Season six will be adapted for television by co-executive producer Gaby Chiappe, with Adam Randall returning to direct.
All four seasons of Slow Horses are currently available for streaming on Apple TV+, although the company does not disclose viewership data for its shows.
The third season of Slow Horses received nine Emmy nominations in 2024, including best drama series and best lead actor for Oldman. Writer-showrunner Will Smith won the award for best writing for a drama series.
In a previous interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Smith shared his plans to adapt all nine books in the Slough House series for the screen. He noted, “Mick is writing the ninth now, but we’ll have to see what happens. It depends on what Apple wants and what the appetite is, but I definitely have the kind of leave-them-wanting-more rather than the outstay-your-welcome instinct.”
Smith also mentioned The Secret Hours, a sidebar book by Herron that explores Jackson Lamb’s backstory and features existing characters. He hinted at the possibility of creating a shorter-run series or a film based on this material, stating, “I know Gary wants to keep going for as long as he’s asked. He loves playing the character.”
