Global Screen has secured international distribution rights (excluding Benelux and Latvia) for “The Book of Everything,” directed by Ineke Houtman. The film is based on Guus Kuijer’s autobiographical novel.
Originally a Dutch book featuring elements of magical realism, “The Book of Everything” has been translated into 14 European languages and Japanese. It has also been adapted into a theater play in Australia.
The film premiered in the Netherlands on October 10, released by September Film, with Jorn Bars producing for KaapHollandFilm.
Set in Amsterdam in 1961, the story follows nine-year-old Thomas, who struggles under the strict authority of his religious father. Together with his rebellious sister and timid mother, Thomas uses his vivid imagination to escape his oppressive home life. The backdrop of the story highlights the gradual lifting of post-war gloom, as neighbors embrace modernity with their new television set.
Bars emphasized the film’s important message: “The film tells a compelling story about domestic violence and teaches us that overcoming fear is the key to happiness. It presents this theme in a fantastic, visual, and humorous way that will entertain audiences of all ages.”
Klaus Rasmussen, co-head of international sales and acquisitions at Global Screen, praised the film, stating, “‘The Book of Everything’ impressed us with its unique blend of captivating drama and the magical world of a child facing significant personal challenges. The film resonates with both young and adult viewers, taking them on an emotional journey.”
