Angelina Jolie will be honored with the Maltin Modern Master Award at the 40th annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival on February 5, 2025.
The Modern Master Award was established in 1995 to recognize filmmakers who have made significant contributions to the film industry. It was renamed in 2015 to pay tribute to long-time SBIFF moderator and film critic Leonard Maltin.
Maltin praised Jolie, stating, “Angelina Jolie makes bold choices, both as an actress and as a director. She sets the bar high in both disciplines and always comes through. I look forward to reviewing her career with her in Santa Barbara.”
Jolie is among a prestigious list of past recipients, including Jamie Lee Curtis, Nicole Kidman, Javier Bardem, Robert Downey Jr., Denzel Washington, Cate Blanchett, George Clooney, Christopher Plummer, Christopher Nolan, James Cameron, Clint Eastwood, and Peter Jackson.
Her filmography features notable titles such as Maleficent, Girl, Interrupted, Challenging, and Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Recently, she received acclaim for her role in Pablo Larraín’s biopic Maria, where Variety film critic Owen Gleiberman described her performance as “imperious, mysterious, fusing the life force of a genius diva with the downbeat emotional fire of a femme fatale.” Gleiberman noted that Jolie “reminds you that she can be a deadly serious actor of commanding subtlety and power.”
The 40th annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival will take place from February 4 to February 15, 2025. The festival will feature screenings, filmmaker Q&As, celebrity tributes, and industry panels at venues including the Rivera Theatre, the SBIFF Film Center, and the Arlington Theatre.
