Tom Hanks first crossed paths with Rita Wilson in 1981 while he was still married to his late first wife, Samantha Lewes. Wilson guest-starred in an episode of Hanks’ cross-dressing sitcom, Bosom Buddies, on ABC.
Hanks and Lewes divorced in 1987 after nine years of marriage. Following the split, Wilson became a stepmother to Hanks’ children from that marriage: 46-year-old Colin Hanks and 42-year-old Elizabeth Ann Hanks.
Hanks and Wilson celebrated their 36th wedding anniversary on April 30. When asked about the secret to their enduring relationship, Hanks told E! News, “Finding each other! How about that?” Wilson echoed this sentiment during an interview with CBS Mornings, saying, “We do have fun. You’ve gotta have fun!”
The couple has three grandchildren and two sons: Chester “Chet” Hanks, 34, who recently celebrated three years of sobriety on September 16, and Truman Hanks, 28, who recently worked as a film loader on the Amazon Prime Video series Fallout.
Last Friday, Hanks supported Wilson as she promoted her new single, “Look How Far We’ve Come,” on Instagram, calling her his “favorite recording artist.” Wilson is scheduled to perform live again on March 8, 2025, at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville, TN.
