Alicia Silverstone has been added to the cast of “Bugonia,” the upcoming sci-fi conspiracy film directed by Yorgos Lanthimos. The film, led by Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons, marks Silverstone’s return to collaborating with Lanthimos, following her role in his 2017 psychological thriller, “The Killing of a Sacred Deer.”
“Bugonia” follows the story of two conspiracy-obsessed men who kidnap a powerful CEO, convinced she is an alien with plans to destroy Earth. The screenplay, written by Emmy winner Will Tracy (“Succession,” “The Menu”), is based on the 2003 South Korean dark comedy, “Save the Green Planet.” Specific details about Silverstone’s role in the film have not been disclosed.
The film is a collaborative production between CJ ENM, the company behind “Parasite,” and Square Peg, led by Ari Aster and Lars Knudsen. Lanthimos, along with Aster, Knudsen, Ed Guiney, and Andrew Lowe (Element Pictures), are producing the film. Emma Stone (through her production company, Fruit Tree) is also involved as a producer, alongside Miky Lee and Jerry Kyoungboum Ko from CJ ENM. Financing for the film is being provided by CJ ENM and Fremantle.
Focus Features acquired domestic distribution rights for “Bugonia” at the Cannes Film Festival and is set to release the film in U.S. theaters on November 7, 2025. Universal Pictures will handle international distribution, excluding South Korea, where CJ ENM will oversee the film’s release.
Silverstone’s recent projects include her role in the Netflix drama “Reptile,” which debuted at No. 1 on the platform, and the dark comedy “Krazy House,” which premiered at Sundance. She is also set to appear in A24’s “Y2K,” directed by Kyle Mooney and Evan Winter, and produced by Jonah Hill and Chris Storer. The film screened at SXSW and is scheduled for a December release. Earlier this year, Silverstone starred in “Mustache,” which won the Audience Award at SXSW 2023. She has also recently wrapped production on Justin Kelly’s film “The Bird and the Bee.” Her other notable projects include “Perpetrator,” “Senior Year,” “The Lodge,” “Valley Girl,” and the TV series “American Woman.” In 2021, she earned a Daytime Emmy nomination for her role in Netflix’s “The Baby-Sitters Club.”
