“LOL: Last One Laughing,” the hit Amazon Prime comedy format adapted in over 20 regions, is launching an innovative French spinoff featuring hidden cameras.
In the original format, well-known comedians stay in a house and compete to make each other laugh. The new version, titled “LOL In Real Life,” will take six celebrities into public spaces across France. They will interact with unsuspecting people who are unaware of the game, with all encounters captured by hidden cameras.
Commissioned by Thomas Dubois, head of Amazon MGM Studios in France, the spinoff introduces fresh rules. Contestants will aim to make as many people laugh as possible, with each laugh earning one point. After a six-hour game, the two celebrities with the highest scores will advance to the finale.
Philippe Lacheau, a popular actor and filmmaker who hosted four seasons of “LOL: Tu ris, Tu perds,” will also lead “LOL In Real Life.” The show is produced by Endemol France.
“Laughing Out Loud” originates from the Japanese format “Hitoshi Matsumoto Presents Documental,” created by Yoshimoto Kogyo. Amazon has rolled out local versions in about 20 regions, including Mexico, hosted by Eugenio Derbez, and Australia, with Rebel Wilson.
“LOL In Real Life” will premiere exclusively on Prime Video in 240 territories worldwide in 2025. Additionally, Season 5 of “LOL: Qui rit, sort” is set to debut next year, featuring a star-studded French cast including Artus, Cédric Doumbe, Camille Chamoux, Vincent Dedienne, and more. The French team at Amazon Studios previously expanded “Laughing Out Loud” with a Halloween special, “LOL: Qui Crie, Sort!,” released last fall.
The “Laughing Out Loud” format will be highlighted in a panel discussion at the Cannes Mipcom TV market today, featuring key figures from Amazon MGM Studios and Yoshimoto Kogyo.
