Shout! Studios has finalized a licensing agreement with Mercury Studios Media Limited for exclusive distribution rights to the Monty Python catalog in the United States and Canada. This deal includes a variety of distribution channels such as ad-supported video on demand (AVOD), subscription video on demand (SVOD), broadcast, theatrical, and non-theatrical releases.
The agreement covers classic content like the renowned sketch comedy series “Monty Python’s Flying Circus,” which has been recently restored and is now available in high definition across all platforms. Additionally, it includes iconic films like “Monty Python’s Life of Brian” and “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” which will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2025.
Garson Foos, CEO of Shout! Studios, emphasized the company’s commitment to showcasing exceptional entertainment. “Since our early days, we have aimed to be a trusted home for beloved films and series,” Foos stated. “Monty Python is iconic and has always been a priority for us. We are fans first and foremost, and the timeless nature of their work opens up many opportunities.”
Jordan Fields, Senior Vice President of Acquisitions and Originals, added, “Monty Python holds a special place in the hearts of comedy lovers across generations. Their work sets the standard for clever, cinematic satire. We consider this acquisition a significant achievement for Shout!”
The studio plans to leverage its partnerships to explore various ways to promote the Monty Python catalog. The rollout of AVOD distribution will include Shout! TV, a streaming service that highlights cult favorites for fans of pop culture. Shout! TV is known for its unique programming events, including original content, marathons, and celebrations, all of which will feature Monty Python prominently.
Monty Python, the legendary comedy troupe, was founded in 1969 by Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin.
The deal was negotiated by Fields for Shout! Studios and by Will White and Rebecca Bradshaw for Mercury Studios. Holly Gilliam represented Python (Monty) Pictures Limited in the negotiations.
