The long-awaited reboot of the Scary Movie franchise is finally in motion, with the Wayans brothers reuniting for the first time in 18 years. Announced at CinemaCon, this new installment will feature an original screenplay and is set to begin filming next year, with a theatrical release planned.
The Scary Movie franchise, known for its comedic takes on slasher films like Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer, was originally created by Marlon, Shawn, and Keenen Ivory Wayans. Keenen directed and wrote the first two films, while Marlon and Shawn starred in them.
Miramax’s Jonathan Glickman expressed enthusiasm about the reunion, stating, “We are thrilled to bring Scary Movie back with the Wayans brothers, the brilliant creators behind the beloved franchise. The timing is perfect to revive this series for audiences worldwide, and we’re fortunate to have the Wayans’ unique comedic vision.”
In a joint statement, the Wayans brothers shared their excitement: “We couldn’t be more thrilled to work together on the new Scary Movie. This is a franchise we created over 20 years ago, and we fondly remember the laughter it brought to audiences. We look forward to collaborating with Jonathan Glickman and his team at Miramax to bring these laughs back to theaters.”
The original Scary Movie comedies were hugely successful, grossing over $896 million worldwide across five films. The first installment, released in 2000, became one of the highest-grossing R-rated horror movies of its time, opening at $42.5 million—the largest debut for an R-rated horror film directed by a Black filmmaker.
Scary Movie is part of Paramount Pictures’ first-look deal with Miramax, which will oversee the project. Becky Sloviter, President of Miramax Motion Picture Group, is leading the effort.
Marlon Wayans is also set to star in the psychological sports thriller HIM, produced by Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions, scheduled for release in September 2025. He is currently on his Wild Child Tour across the nation. Marlon is represented by 3 Arts Entertainment, UTA, and Yorn, Levine, Barnes, while Shawn Wayans is represented by Yorn, Levine. Rick Alvarez, who has collaborated with Marlon on films like Fifty Shades of Black and Sextuplets, is also involved in the project.
As the Wayans brothers prepare for this exciting new chapter, fans eagerly anticipate the return of the franchise that redefined comedy in the horror genre.
