The much-anticipated reunion of Tom Hanks and Robin Wright in the film Here, directed by Robert Zemeckis, has not met the expectations of fans. Critics have largely rejected the film, which chronicles the lives of multiple families across generations in a unique setting. Currently, Here holds a disappointing 33% “rotten” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 24 reviews.
Odie Henderson of the Boston Globe offered a harsh critique, likening the film to a poorly executed school play. He remarked, “The broad acting and cliché-ridden screenplay, combined with the fixed-frame format, make Here feel like a bad sitcom.” Similarly, Peter Debruge from Variety questioned the film’s approach, suggesting that its static point of view might have been more suitable for a museum installation than a movie.
Adding to the film’s intrigue, Robin Wright recently discussed her past with Hanks during the filming of Forrest Gump. In an interview with Today, Wright revealed that they never really connected on set because Hanks was focused on running, a key aspect of his character in the 1994 Oscar-winning film. “We were racing around shooting that movie, and every lunch period, Tom was out running,” she shared.
Despite their limited interaction during Forrest Gump, Wright expressed enthusiasm about reuniting with Hanks and Zemeckis for Here, stating, “It was literally like getting the band back together.” She emphasized her eagerness to collaborate with both talents again, highlighting the special bond they share.
Here premiered in previews on Thursday and officially opens in theaters nationwide on Friday. While the critical response has been lukewarm, fans of Hanks and Wright are likely to flock to theaters, eager to witness their on-screen reunion. As both actors continue to grow in their careers, their collaboration serves as a reminder of the magic they created together in Forrest Gump.
