Spanish sales company Film Factory Entertainment has secured the global rights to “The Cavern Crimes,” directed by Manuel Rios San Martín. The company is currently presenting the film to potential buyers at the American Film Market (AFM).
Alfa Pictures will handle the theatrical release in Spain, scheduled for spring 2025.
Set in Burgos, near the Atapuerca archaeological site, the film’s plot revolves around an investigation into the ritual murder of a young girl. This crime triggers mass psychosis in a nearby town that had experienced a similar tragedy six years prior.
Film Factory Managing Director Vicente Canales described “The Cavern Crimes” as an intense thriller that combines elements of crime and mystery within the unique historical context of Atapuerca, known for housing the oldest human remains outside of Africa. “It’s an iconic location never before portrayed in film,” Canales said, highlighting its international potential.
Director San Martín emphasized the film’s deeper themes, stating, “Violence is the fruit of natural selection. It contributed to bring us here, although now we are ashamed of it and don’t know how to handle it.
But violence is literally in our DNA.” He added that he aimed to create not just a thrilling experience but also a film with underlying philosophical questions about humanity, exploring both violence and empathy through the lens of Atapuerca’s discoveries.
Produced by La Charito Films, “The Cavern Crimes” is currently in post-production after filming took place from August to October of this year. The production team has crafted a unique environment using technology that enhances the storytelling experience.
Film Factory is actively promoting “The Cavern Crimes” at AFM, aiming to attract interest from international markets.
