Charli XCX is making her acting debut in an exciting new film, joining a star-studded cast that includes Salma Hayek, Chris Evans, and Anya Taylor-Joy. The pop singer-turned-actress previously expressed interest in acting after the success of her latest album.
Directed by Romain Gavras, the film is already in production in Greece and Bulgaria. The screenplay, co-written by Gavras and Succession writer Will Arbery, offers a reimagined take on the life of Joan of Arc, with Anya Taylor-Joy playing the title role. Though inspired by the historical figure, the film’s version of Joan is described as “loosely based” on the legendary French heroine.
According to Deadline, the film follows Joan as a “zealous spirit” on a mission to prevent a catastrophic fate, driven by a prophetic vision only she can hear. She embarks on a journey that leads her to hijack a glamorous charity gala, taking three hostages in the process: Mike Tyler (Chris Evans), a troubled movie star seeking redemption; Bracken (Vincent Cassel), the world’s wealthiest man; and Katie (Ambika Mod), an unfortunate bystander. Together, they are forced to navigate a perilous journey through forests and flames, ultimately prompting Tyler to question what he is willing to sacrifice for the greater good.
Along with their starring roles, Taylor-Joy and Evans are also serving as executive producers for the project.
Salma Hayek, meanwhile, continues to be a busy force in Hollywood. In addition to her role in Joan of Arc, she is also working on the upcoming TV series Like Water for Chocolate, inspired by the popular novel and film. The six-episode series, starring Azul Guaita, explores the forbidden romance between Tita and Pedro in early 20th-century Mexico.
The Joan of Arc film promises to be a thrilling addition to these stars’ already impressive portfolios.
