Lucasfilm is embarking on a new adventure in the “Star Wars” universe, announcing that Simon Kinberg, known for his work on the “X-Men” franchise, will write and produce a new trilogy of films. This marks a significant step for the franchise, which has not seen a theatrical release since “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” in 2019.
The trilogy is set to introduce fresh characters and narratives, diverging from the established Skywalker Saga that began with George Lucas’s original film in 1977. While initial reports suggested that Kinberg’s films might continue the saga as Episodes X through XII, Lucasfilm has clarified that this new series will not follow the storyline laid out by Lucas. Instead, it aims to create a standalone narrative within the expansive “Star Wars” universe.
Kinberg, who has an extensive background in blockbuster filmmaking, expressed his excitement for the project. He previously co-created the animated series “Star Wars: Rebels” and consulted on “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” His involvement with Lucasfilm positions him uniquely to contribute to this new chapter.
In addition to Kinberg’s trilogy, Disney has several other “Star Wars” projects in development. Upcoming films include Jon Favreau’s “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” scheduled for release on May 22, 2026, and two untitled films set for December 2026 and December 2027. Other notable projects include films from directors like James Mangold and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, with Obaid-Chinoy’s film focusing on a new Jedi Order set fifteen years after the sequel trilogy.
Despite ongoing expansions in the “Star Wars” television landscape through series such as “The Mandalorian,” “Ahsoka,” and “Andor,” fans are eagerly awaiting details about Kinberg’s trilogy. As of now, production timelines remain uncertain, and it is unclear when filming will commence.
Kinberg’s previous credits include significant contributions to the “X-Men” series and acclaimed films like “Logan” and “Deadpool.” His experience suggests he will bring a strong vision to this new endeavor.
However, sources indicate that Kinberg’s trilogy is still in its early stages of development, leaving fans hopeful yet patient for further updates on this exciting new chapter in the “Star Wars” saga.
