The finale of The Penguin has set a new viewership record, attracting 2.1 million viewers across all platforms on Sunday night. This impressive figure marks a significant milestone for the series, which is a spinoff of The Batman.
According to HBO, this finale viewership represents a 50% increase compared to the show’s premiere episode, which aired on September 19 and garnered approximately 1.4 million viewers. Since its debut, the first episode has accumulated nearly 17 million viewers in the United States alone.
The Penguin has established itself as one of the most-watched current titles on HBO and Max. It ranks third in global viewership for debut seasons, trailing only behind House of the Dragon and The Last of Us.
Colin Farrell reprises his role as Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot, a gangster in Gotham City, in this series. The story unfolds shortly after the events of The Batman, focusing on Oz’s efforts to take control of Gotham’s criminal underworld following the death of his former boss, Carmine Falcone.
The cast includes Cristin Milioti, Rhenzy Feliz, Deirdre O’Connell, Clancy Brown, Carmen Ejogo, and Michael Zegen. Mark Strong appears as Falcone in flashbacks, while John Turturro portrayed him in The Batman.
Lauren LeFranc serves as the writer, executive producer, and showrunner for The Penguin. Matt Reeves, director of The Batman, also executive produces through his company 6th & Idaho. Dylan Clark is another executive producer through Dylan Clark Productions. Farrell not only stars in the series but also serves as an executive producer.
Craig Zobel directed the first three episodes and is also an executive producer. Other executive producers include Daniel Pipski from 6th & Idaho and Bill Carraro, with Rafi Crohn as co-executive producer.
As The Penguin concludes its first season with record viewership, anticipation grows for what may come next for this popular series.
