David Fincher’s acclaimed thriller “Se7en” is set to make its IMAX debut as part of its 30th anniversary celebration. Originally released in 1995, the film will be screened in IMAX theaters starting January 3, 2025, in the U.S. and Canada, with international dates to follow. This marks the first time “Se7en” will be shown in IMAX, as it was never released in this format during its initial run.
The film stars Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman as detectives investigating a series of gruesome murders linked to the Seven Deadly Sins. The cast also includes Gwyneth Paltrow, Kevin Spacey, John C. McGinley, and R. Lee Ermey. Fincher directed the film based on a screenplay by Andrew Kevin Walker.
In addition to the IMAX release, “Se7en” will be available on digital platforms and on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray starting January 7, 2025. The restoration was completed at Warner Bros. Discovery’s Motion Picture Imaging and was overseen by Fincher himself, using the original camera negative. This new version includes commentaries from Fincher, Pitt, and Freeman, along with deleted scenes and animated storyboards of an un-shot ending.
The film received critical acclaim upon its release, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Film Editing and a nomination for Best Original Screenplay at the British Academy Film Awards.
Fincher’s previous collaboration with Pitt, “Fight Club,” also saw a remastered release in 2024 for its 25th anniversary. That film will have a theatrical re-release later.
Fans of “Se7en” can expect a meticulously restored version that maintains the original aspect ratio and avoids any alterations typically associated with IMAX presentations. This restoration aims to provide audiences with an authentic viewing experience of one of cinema’s most iconic thrillers.
