Gubbara Entertainment, a production company founded by former Netflix producer Dimpy Agrawal, has announced a lineup of six feature films at India’s Film Bazaar. Among the projects is a film starring Anasuya Sengupta, who made history as the first Indian actor to win Best Performance at Cannes’ Un Certain Regard for her role in The Shameless.
Sengupta will lead the film Ma, written by Riddhi Talreja, a graduate of Columbia University’s MFA program. The film will explore themes of women’s identity and motherhood in modern Indian society.
Cinematographer Amal Sudhakaran, known for his work on platforms like Netflix and Amazon, is attached to the project. One of his works has even received Emmy recognition.
Another project in the slate is Puthussery Police Case, written and directed by Nithin Lukose, whose debut film Paka: River of Blood premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in 2021. This Kerala-based drama follows a lawyer investigating his father’s death while dealing with a tiger threatening a rural village.
Ummeed, a psychological horror film that examines same-sex relationships and fertility in Delhi, is being developed by Abhishek Banerjee, known for his work on Pari and Pataal Lok. Ambiecka Pandit is in discussions to direct.
Sushma Khadepaun, who previously showcased her award-winning short film Anita at the Venice Film Festival in 2020, will adapt it into a feature-length film. This India-U.S. co-production follows an Indian woman’s quest for independence through an arranged marriage in America.
Banerjee is also adapting journalist Puja Changoiwala’s book Gangster on the Run, which tells the story of a former criminal turned ultra-marathoner. He will co-produce this project with Rohit Ved Prakash and Kanchan Marathe.
Completing the lineup is Red Market, based on Scott Carney’s book about human trafficking and organ trade. This film is set to be produced in collaboration with Criss Cross Content and Jugaad Motion Pictures.
Earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival market, Gubbara announced a $1 million script development fund aimed at supporting Indian feature filmmakers.
“Our focus has been on development—telling stories that challenge belief systems and drive meaningful impact,” Agrawal stated. “We’re fostering global connections through international co-productions and collaborations. By bridging cultures and pushing creative boundaries, we hope to redefine storytelling on a global stage.”
Gubbara’s debut short film Chashma is currently making its rounds on the festival circuit, while several other projects are still in early development.
Film Bazaar runs from November 20 to 24 as part of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), which takes place from November 20 to 28 in Goa.
