Her Story, a comedy-drama focusing on female perspectives, debuted at the top of the mainland China box office during its opening weekend. The film outperformed Gladiator II, which opened in fourth place.
According to data from Artisan Gateway, Her Story earned RMB 125 million (approximately $17.5 million) from Friday to Sunday. Including previews, its total gross reached $21.7 million, marking one of the strongest openings in a challenging autumn season. Directed by Shao Yihui, known for B For Busy, the film follows two women—a recently unemployed single mother and her troubled new neighbor—who form a friendship while navigating various relationship challenges, including an abusive ex-husband and new romantic interests.
In second place was the Japanese animated film Crayon Shinchan: Our Dinosaur Story, which opened on Saturday and earned $8.8 million over two days.
The previous weekend’s top film, To Gather Around (also known as Brave New World), secured third place with $5.7 million, bringing its two-week total to $21.7 million. Directed by Liu Xunximo and starring Deng Chao and Deng Jiajia, the film tells the story of an internet company employee embroiled in a workplace dispute who teams up with others to defend his rights but finds himself in deeper trouble.
Gladiator II managed to earn RMB 22.1 million (about $3.1 million) during its three-day opening weekend in China. This performance reflects ongoing challenges for many Hollywood films in the Chinese market, despite recent successes with visually impressive releases like Alien: Romulus and Venom: The Last Dance.
Additionally, the rerelease of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt 1 entered the top five at the Chinese box office, earning $2.2 million, with Imax reporting that approximately 30% of this total came from its screens.
The overall weekend box office in China reached $44.3 million, bringing the year-to-date total to $5.62 billion. However, this figure remains 21% lower than it was at the same point in 2023.
