Paramount Animation is assembling a talented team to bring the classic cartoon Mighty Mouse to the big screen. The studio has tapped Ryan Reynolds’ production company, Maximum Effort Productions, to produce the live-action/animated feature as part of their ongoing first-look deal. Additionally, screenwriter Matt Lieberman, who worked with Reynolds on the 2021 hit Free Guy, will pen the script.
Mighty Mouse, a beloved superhero mouse, first appeared in 1942 in the short film The Mouse of Tomorrow. Over the years, he became a pop culture icon, starring in numerous shorts and a popular Saturday morning cartoon. The theme song, Mighty Mouse Theme (Here I Come to Save the Day), became instantly recognizable. While the character has been rebooted several times, recent attempts to adapt him for the big screen have stalled, including a previous project involving the creators of Red and The Meg.
Brad Butler, Paramount Animation’s vice president of animated features, is overseeing the project.
In addition to Free Guy, Lieberman’s credits include The Christmas Chronicles and its sequel, Rumble, Scoob!, and The Addams Family. Reynolds has recently found success with Deadpool & Wolverine and starred in If, which was released by Paramount last summer. Maximum Effort has several other projects in development with the studio, including Boy Band, a comedy about a music group reunion, Starter Villain, an adaptation of John Scalzi’s sci-fi novel, and Eloise, based on the beloved children’s book series.
In February, Maximum Effort announced it had extended its deal with Paramount through 2026. Lieberman is represented by CAA, Lit Entertainment Group, Mortimer PR, and Lichter, Grossman, Nichols, Feldman, Rogal, Shikora & Clark.
