New Zealand’s Black Mandala Films has secured the sales rights for “Play Dead,” a gripping horror film that begins with a woman awakening in a basement filled with corpses, fighting for her survival.
Directed by Carlos ‘Charly’ Goitia, known for “Nightmare Radio: The Night Stalker” and “The Game of 100 Candles: The Last Possession,” the film is produced by Nicolás Onetti, recognized for his work on “1978” and “What the Waters Left Behind.” The screenplay is crafted by Gonzalo Mellid and Camilo Zaffora.
“Play Dead” tells the intense story of Alison, played by Paula Brasca. She finds herself severely injured and trapped in a dark, mysterious basement. In her desperate bid for survival, she must feign death to blend in with the surrounding corpses. As Alison struggles to stay alive, she uncovers a terrifying secret: a grotesque ritualistic celebration is taking place in the house above. The tension escalates with each passing moment.
The film draws significant inspiration from horror classics such as “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and “Don’t Breathe,” merging relentless suspense with disturbing horror elements to deliver an unforgettable viewing experience.
Black Mandala Films has previously represented several of Goitia’s works, including “Nightmare Radio” and “The Game of 100 Candles.” Earlier this year, the company also acquired the sales rights to “1978,” which features a soccer match as its starting point. This film premiered at the Sitges Fantasy and Horror Film Festival in Spain before making its U.S. festival debut at Screamfest on October 12.
