“Sonic the Hedgehog 4” is set to hit theaters on March 19, 2027, marking the fourth chapter in the popular family franchise. Currently, it’s the only film slated for release on that date, though the schedule is likely to change as the year progresses.
Paramount made the announcement for the fourth installment even before the third film, “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” had premiered. This early move turned out to be a wise one, as “Sonic 3,” which released in December, has already become the highest-grossing film in the series. With $218 million in domestic earnings and $422 million worldwide, it has surpassed its predecessors. The first “Sonic the Hedgehog,” which debuted in 2020, also exceeded expectations, grossing $148 million in the U.S. and $319 million globally. It set a record at the time for the highest-grossing video game adaptation in North America. The 2022 sequel, “Sonic the Hedgehog 2,” performed even better, earning $190 million domestically and $405 million globally.
Together, the “Sonic” films have now earned over $1 billion at the global box office. This figure does not include additional revenue from home entertainment, where the franchise has generated over $180 million through digital purchases and rentals. There’s also a spinoff television series, “Knuckles,” which debuted on Paramount+ in 2024.
Jeff Fowler has directed all three films in the series, with Ben Schwartz voicing Sonic, the fast-moving blue hedgehog. Jim Carrey portrays Sonic’s arch-nemesis, Dr. Robotnik, while Idris Elba and Colleen O’Shaughnessey voice the beloved characters Knuckles and Tails. In the third movie, Keanu Reeves joins the cast as Shadow the Hedgehog, and Carrey plays Dr. Robotnik’s grandfather, Gerald.
