Universal is leading the charge at this year’s BAFTA Film Awards, dominating the nominations with its slate of films. The studio secured an impressive 32 nominations in total, more than double that of its closest rival, Netflix.
Among Universal’s top contenders are The Brutalist, which received nine nominations, followed by Anora and Wicked, each earning seven. Other notable films from the studio include Nosferatu with five nominations, The Wild Robot with three, and Monkey Man with one.
In comparison, Netflix earned 16 nominations overall, with its highest recognition coming from Emilia Pérez, which scored 11 nods. Despite this strong showing, Universal’s haul significantly outpaced the competition.
Universal’s total could have been even higher, as the studio lost out on five additional nominations after offloading Coralie Fargeat’s body-horror film The Substance before Cannes. Mubi, which acquired the film, helped the arthouse distributor earn six nominations, including one for Bird.
Meanwhile, emerging distributor Black Bear U.K. had an exceptional year, securing 12 nominations. Conclave led the way with 11 nominations, while Sing Sing earned three.
Black Bear’s total edged out Disney, which received 10 nominations, mostly for A Complete Unknown from Searchlight.
Overall, Universal’s dominance at the BAFTA nominations reflects the studio’s strong presence in the industry this year.
