Stephen Schwartz, the renowned composer and lyricist behind Wicked, will be honored with the prestigious Icon Award by the Guild of Music Supervisors (GMS). Known for his work on Enchanted, Godspell, and
The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Schwartz has made a significant mark on the world of musical theater and film.
The Guild will also present its Legacy Award to music producer Bonnie Greenberg for her lasting contributions to the industry.
In a statement, GMS president Lindsay Wolfington and VP Heather Guibert expressed their excitement, saying, “The Guild of Music Supervisors Awards is a chance for our community to come together, and we need that more than ever. This year, we are excited to honor Stephen Schwartz and Bonnie Greenberg with the Icon and Legacy Awards. Their extraordinary work in storytelling through music has left a lasting impact on our community.”
Schwartz’s latest achievement includes an Oscar nomination for his collaboration with John Powell on the instrumental score for Wicked, which has become the highest-grossing film adaptation of a stage musical since Mamma Mia! in 2008, earning over $634 million worldwide.
Schwartz shared his enjoyment of the film’s success, recalling a unique moment when librarians at the Library of Congress performed the choreography for the song “What Is This Feeling?” He commented to Variety, “It was wild to see librarians performing the dance in the aisles. They were very good at it, and I have no idea how they managed to learn the choreography.”
The Guild of Music Supervisors Awards will take place on February 23 at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles, celebrating the art of music supervision.
Previous Icon Award winners include legendary figures like Robbie Robertson, Paul Williams, Diane Warren, Quincy Jones, and Burt Bacharach. Legacy Award honorees have included Allan Mason, Pilar McCurry, and Mitchell Leib, among others.
