Amazon MGM Studios’ highly anticipated film Red One, starring Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans, will begin streaming on Prime Video worldwide on Thursday, December 12, 2024. While the film will be available for streaming, it will also continue to play in theaters.
The movie, which boasts a production budget of over $200 million, is currently in its 28-day theatrical window. As of Sunday, Red One has grossed $85.7 million domestically and $164 million worldwide. The film was shown in 3,150 theaters across the United States and 4,000 screens internationally this past weekend. Originally planned as a Prime Video release, Red One was later switched to a theatrical distribution model.
This 28-day theatrical window aligns with the release strategies of other major films from Amazon MGM Studios, including Air and Saltburn. Prime Video, which has more than 200 million subscribers globally, is available in over 240 countries and territories. Amazon has stated that the financial success of Red One is not based on traditional box office metrics but on its performance on Prime Video and its impact on Amazon’s broader shopping platform. In other words, if the film covers its marketing costs through its theatrical release, its overall visibility will boost its long-term success, even if its domestic box office opening of $32.1 million is relatively modest for a film of this scale.
Red One has been well-received, earning an A- on CinemaScore and a 90% rating on the Rotten Tomatoes Popcornmeter. Notably, Dwayne Johnson becomes the first Hollywood star since Nicolas Cage in June 1997 to have two films debut at No. 1 in a single month.
Previous holiday releases on Prime Video have also performed strongly, including Candy Cane Lane, which debuted on December 1, 2023, and amassed 803 million minutes of watch time. Additionally, Road House, directed by Doug Liman and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, debuted in March 2024, drawing 1.32 billion minutes of watch time, according to Nielsen.
