Snoop Dogg is set to star in and co-produce The Last Man, an original sci-fi film directed by Luc Besson. The movie, which is shrouded in secrecy, is believed to be inspired by films like Planet of the Apes, with some speculation suggesting a connection to Snoop’s 2009 song “Last Man Standing.”
The film marks Besson’s return to science fiction after his successful works, The Fifth Element (1997) and Lucy (2014). Lucy was a major box office hit, grossing $469 million globally. Besson’s 2017 project, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, didn’t perform as well, grossing $226 million worldwide. However, The Last Man is expected to follow the formula of The Fifth Element, combining sci-fi, action, and comedy.
This collaboration between Besson and Dogg is not their first. Nearly two decades ago, the two worked together on the animated film Arthur and the Minimoys, where Snoop Dogg voiced a prominent character.
The film will be produced by Virginie Besson-Silla and Luc Besson through their company EuropaCorp, with Snoop Dogg and Sara Ramaker co-producing via Death Row Pictures. Filming is set to begin in 2025.
Besson expressed his long-standing admiration for Snoop, saying, “I’ve been a big fan of Snoop Dogg’s music ever since ‘Who Am I.’ We first met 20 years ago, and we’ve always wanted to work together again. We just needed the right project — and this is it, with Snoop in the lead role.”
Snoop Dogg shared his excitement about working with Besson, saying, “Ever since I saw The Professional, I’ve wanted Luc to direct a full movie for me. Now we finally get the chance for him to write and direct me in a Luc Besson movie.”
Snoop spent time in Paris during the Summer Olympics, where he served as a torchbearer and special correspondent for NBC. He also performed during the closing ceremony to promote the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
Besson’s most recent film, Dogman, starring Caleb Landry Jones, competed at the Venice Film Festival. He has since reunited with Jones for a new project, Dracula, an adaptation of Bram Stoker’s classic Gothic novel. Dracula also stars Christoph Waltz.
