Taika Waititi will be honored with the prestigious Norman Lear Achievement Award at the 36th Annual Producers Guild Awards, scheduled for February 8, 2025.
The award recognizes outstanding contributions to television by a producer or producing team. Previous recipients include prominent figures such as Mindy Kaling, Greg Berlanti, and Ryan Murphy.
In a joint statement, Producers Guild of America Presidents Stephanie Allain and Donald De Line praised Waititi’s impact on the television industry. “Taika Waititi has profoundly transformed the television landscape with his imaginative work as a producer, bringing groundbreaking series like What We Do in the Shadows, Our Flag Means Death, and Reservation Dogs to life,” they said. “Through his commitment to diverse narratives and amplifying Indigenous voices, Taika redefines storytelling, making cultural experiences a central part of mainstream media.”
Waititi is best known for co-creating and executive producing Reservation Dogs, an Indigenous American comedy that won the 2021 Gotham Award for Best Short-Form Breakthrough Series and the 2022 Independent Spirit Award for Best New Scripted Series. The show has earned two Peabody Awards and multiple nominations, including Writers Guild of America Awards, Golden Globe Awards, and an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Comedy.
Reflecting on the honor, Waititi said, “To be included alongside legends like Norman Lear is truly humbling. My work as a producer has always been about telling stories that reflect the world as it is—messy, diverse, and full of humanity.
I’m lucky to work with an amazing team and am grateful to help give a voice to storytellers who deserve to be heard.”
In addition to his work on Reservation Dogs, Waititi recently executive produced Apple TV+’s Time Bandits, directed the pilot for Hulu’s Interior Chinatown, and is currently directing the adaptation of Klara and the Sun, set to release next year.
The 2025 Producers Guild Awards will be chaired by Mike Farah and Joe Farrell. The ceremony, produced by Anchor Street Collective, will be written by Jody Lambert, Lauren Cortizo, and Matt Oberg, with Branden Chapman serving as executive producer and Carleen Cappelletti as co-executive producer.
