The highly anticipated sequel to 28 Years Later, titled The Bone Temple, will hit theaters on January 16, 2026, announced Columbia Pictures today.
The film’s release is scheduled for the Martin Luther King Jr. weekend, just six months after the first film in the trilogy, 28 Years Later, which is set for release on June 20, 2025. The new film will bring back stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, and Ralph Fiennes, who all filmed The Bone Temple back-to-back with the first installment.
Set nearly three decades after the deadly “rage virus” escaped from a biological weapons laboratory, the 28 Years Later trilogy continues to follow the lives of survivors still trapped in a harsh quarantine zone. The official synopsis for 28 Years Later describes a group of survivors who have found refuge on a small island, isolated from the chaos of the mainland by a heavily fortified causeway. However, when one survivor ventures into the heart of the infected mainland on a mission, he uncovers terrifying new mutations among both the infected and other survivors.
While plot details for The Bone Temple are being kept under wraps, the film is directed by Nia DaCosta, known for The Marvels and the 2021 horror film Candyman. The screenplay is penned by Alex Garland, who also returns as a producer alongside Danny Boyle, Andrew Macdonald, Peter Rice, and Bernard Bellew. Cillian Murphy is credited as an executive producer.
The 28 Days Later franchise began in 2002, with Danny Boyle directing and Alex Garland writing the original film. The series continued with 28 Weeks Later in 2007, cementing the dystopian saga as a cult classic.
With The Bone Temple set to continue the legacy, fans can expect even more twists, terror, and suspense as the saga of survival against the infected unfolds on the big screen.
