HBO has confirmed the renewal of Dune: Prophecy for a second season. The announcement was made during a virtual press conference on Thursday, just days ahead of the Season 1 finale, set to air on Sunday, December 22.
The Dune prequel series, which takes place over 10,000 years before the events of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune films, delves into the origins of the Bene Gesserit. This secretive and powerful order of witches plays a crucial role in shaping the politics of Arrakis from behind the scenes.
Based on the novel Sisterhood of Dune by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, the series centers on Valya Harkonnen (Emily Watson), the leader of the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood, and Tula Harkonnen (Olivia Williams). The two women must unite to face external threats that could jeopardize humanity’s survival. Both characters are ancestors of the infamous House Harkonnen, whose betrayal of Paul Atreides and his father is a pivotal event in the Dune films.
The cast also features Mark Strong as Emperor Javicco Corrino and Sarah-Sofie Boussnina as his daughter, Princess Ynez. Other notable actors include Travis Fimmel, Jodhi May, Josh Heuston, Chloe Lea, Jade Anouka, Faoileann Cunningham, Edward Davis, Aoife Hinds, Chris Mason, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Camilla Beeput, Jihae, Tabu, Charithra Chandran, Jessica Barden, Emma Canning, and Yerin Ha.
The show is helmed by showrunner and executive producer Alison Schapker. Diane Ademu-John co-developed the series and serves as an executive producer. Multiple episodes, including the first, were directed by Anna Foerster, who also executive produces. Additional executive producers include Jordan Goldberg, Mark Tobey, John Cameron, Matthew King, Scott Z. Burns, Jon Spaihts, and Brian Herbert. Byron Merritt and Kim Herbert represent the Frank Herbert estate as executive producers, with Kevin J. Anderson acting as co-producer.
