Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film, titled The Odyssey, has been officially revealed, promising a visually groundbreaking adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic. Universal Pictures recently shared details about the project on social media, describing it as a “mythic action epic” filmed using innovative IMAX technology.
The film, which brings Homer’s legendary story to IMAX screens for the first time, is set to open in theaters worldwide on July 17, 2026. The production will span multiple global locations, capturing the vastness of Odysseus’ journey across the seas.
Nolan has assembled a star-studded cast for the project, featuring Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, and Charlize Theron. The film will follow Nolan’s successful collaboration with Universal on Oppenheimer, which garnered multiple Academy Awards. The production is expected to begin in mid-2025, with Nolan both writing and producing under his Syncopy banner alongside his longtime partner, Emma Thomas.
Homer’s The Odyssey is one of the oldest and most influential works of literature. The epic recounts the trials of Greek hero Odysseus as he struggles to return home after the Trojan War. Though the story has been adapted several times before, Nolan’s version promises to offer a fresh cinematic experience, especially with its use of cutting-edge IMAX film technology. Previous adaptations of the tale include a 1911 silent film by Giuseppe de Liguoro, the 1954 classic Ulysses starring Kirk Douglas, and the 2000 comedy O Brother, Where Art Thou?, which loosely drew inspiration from the epic.
Tom Holland, one of the film’s leads, recently admitted he joined the project without knowing much about the plot. “To be perfectly honest, I don’t really know what it’s about,” he said in a recent interview on The Dish podcast. “I’m super excited, but it’s been pretty quiet about the project. I met with [Nolan] and it was awesome. He kind of loosely pitched what it is, and I’m sure when he’s ready he’ll announce what it’s about.”
With a stellar cast, groundbreaking technology, and the prestige of Nolan’s direction, The Odyssey is already one of the most anticipated films of 2026.
