Keanu Reeves, the star of the John Wick franchise, has hinted that he may be too old to continue playing the iconic assassin in a potential John Wick 5. While the action-packed series has become one of the most popular and influential franchises of its kind, Reeves expressed doubts about his ability to return for another installment.
In a recent interview with CBS News, Reeves, now 59, admitted that while he loves the John Wick films, his physical limitations may prevent him from taking on another film. “You can never say never,” Reeves said. “But right now, my knees are saying, ‘I can’t do another John Wick.’ My heart says yes, but I don’t know if my knees can handle it.”
Though Reeves’ dedication to the role remains clear, he suggested that the future of John Wick might lie outside his character’s journey. While Reeves will appear in the upcoming Ballerina spinoff, which is set to release in June 2025, his character’s continued presence in the franchise remains uncertain. The film stars Ana de Armas as a new assassin, potentially signaling a shift away from John Wick himself.
In the Ballerina trailer, de Armas’ character asks John Wick, “How do I start doing what you do?” to which he replies, “Looks like you already have.” This exchange suggests that Ballerina could act as a form of a “passing of the torch,” with de Armas’ character taking up the mantle of the franchise’s central figure.
While Ballerina might serve as a spiritual continuation of John Wick 5, the future of the main franchise remains in limbo. If this film marks the end of John Wick’s story, fans can at least take comfort in knowing the character will be succeeded by a strong, new lead.
