Jason Momoa is set to remain a key figure in the DC Universe, with the actor joining the upcoming Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow as Lobo, the alien bounty hunter. This role marks a significant shift for Momoa, who is best known for his portrayal of Aquaman in the franchise’s previous films. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the casting on Monday.
Lobo, a blue-skinned, cigar-chomping character with superhuman strength and regenerative healing powers, was created in 1983 by writer Roger Slifer and artist Keith Giffen. The character has long been a fan favorite, often clashing with both heroes and villains in the DC comics.
Momoa has been vocal about his desire to play Lobo for years. During press tours for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, the actor expressed hope that DC would eventually give him the opportunity. On Instagram, he shared a quote from that tour, captioned, “they called,” confirming his long-awaited role.
This announcement comes after several failed attempts to bring Lobo to the big screen. Directors like Guy Ritchie and Brad Peyton, along with actor Dwayne Johnson, were once attached to the character, but the project never came to fruition. In addition, Emmett J. Scanlan portrayed Lobo on the Krypton TV series.
Momoa’s transition from Aquaman to Lobo is a notable move in the new DC Universe under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran. When Gunn and Safran took over the DC brand, they indicated that some actors from the previous regime could continue in new roles. Momoa is the first to make this leap, following his appearances in Justice League alongside Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, and Ray Fisher.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is set to release on June 26, 2026, and will feature Milly Alcock as the title character. This movie will be the second installment in the new DC Universe, following Gunn’s highly anticipated Superman film, slated for release in July.
