In the 2022 defamation trial between Johnny Depp and his ex-wife Amber Heard, Depp emerged with widespread public support, despite the case’s contentious nature. While Heard’s reputation has since faded, Depp has been making strides toward a Hollywood comeback.
In a recent interview on the program Interrogation Raw: Celebrity Under Oath, which aired on December 26, Depp’s legal team revealed the strategies that helped him garner positive public perception during the trial. According to Depp’s attorneys, their approach focused more on shaping public sentiment than solely proving his innocence.
Humor Played A Key Role in Depp’s Public Image
Depp’s lawyers, Benjamin Chew and Jessica Meyers, shared insights into their courtroom strategy. “Johnny’s use of humor really undercut any serious points Amber’s team tried to make,” said Chew. “We wanted to humanize Johnny, helping the jury understand that he was incapable of harming the woman he loved.”
However, Chew also expressed concern about maintaining Depp’s composure. “The main worry was whether Johnny might lose his temper,” he explained. “The opposing side was eager to provoke anger in him.”
The attorneys emphasized the importance of controlling the witness during cross-examination. Chew noted, “In a courtroom, it’s essential to keep the witness composed and in control.”
Depp’s Reaction to His Victory
Following the verdict, Depp’s reaction was one of immense relief. “He was elated, sounding as if the weight of the world had been lifted from his shoulders,” Chew recalled. “He was like a kid, thrilled beyond belief.”
Soon after the case concluded, Depp embarked on a tour to express his gratitude to his fans and supporters.
