Viola Davis’s highly anticipated action thriller, G20, will debut on Amazon Prime Video this spring, the streaming service confirmed to Variety.
Directed by Patricia Riggen, the film stars Davis as U.S. President Danielle Sutton, who becomes the target of an attack during the annual G20 summit of world leaders.
The official synopsis describes the plot: “After narrowly escaping capture by the attackers, President Sutton must use her wits to outsmart the enemy, protect her family, defend her country, and ensure the safety of world leaders.”
G20 will launch globally on Prime Video on April 10, available in 240 territories. Alongside Davis, the cast includes Anthony Anderson as Derek Sutton, Marsai Martin as Serena Sutton, Ramón Rodríguez as Agent Manny Ruiz, Douglas Hodge as Oliver Everett, Elizabeth Marvel as Joanna Worth, Sabrina Impacciatore as Elena Romano, Christopher Farrar as Demetrius Sutton, and Antony Starr as Rutledge.
The screenplay is penned by Caitlin Parrish, Erica Weiss, Logan Miller, and Noah Miller, with the Millers contributing the story. Davis and Julius Tennon, along with Andrew Lazar, produce the film. The project is a co-production between Amazon MGM Studios, MRC, Mad Chance Productions, and JuVee Productions.
Riggen shared her excitement about working with Davis, describing the film as “Viola Davis like you’ve never seen her before — heroically kicking tons of ass in a global thrill ride. G20 is the kind of classic, edge-of-your-seat action film I’ve always loved, but with a modern twist that reflects our technologically advanced world. I hope this film captivates audiences from start to finish.”
Davis, who made history as one of the few individuals to achieve EGOT status (winning an Oscar, Emmy, Grammy, and Tony), spoke about her role at the Red Sea Film Festival in Saudi Arabia last month. Reflecting on her portrayal of President Sutton, she said, “It’s the kind of role you imagine as a kid — playing the most heroic character possible. Danielle Sutton is a war hero who wins the presidency on a liberal platform. The role mirrors some of the themes in American politics, but ultimately, it’s meant to be a fun movie.”
Fans can expect an intense, action-packed ride with Davis in one of her most dynamic roles to date.
