“Shogun” is moving forward with plans for a new season, following its major success at the 2025 Golden Globe Awards. The series won the prestigious Best Drama Series award and claimed three acting honors.
Executive producer and creator Rachel Kondo shared that the creative team is hard at work. “We’re still trying, and we haven’t given up,” she said, though she added uncertainty about what can be revealed at this stage. Her husband and fellow executive producer, Justin Marks, provided a timeline: “We’re about six weeks from the end of the writers’ room.”
Marks, who recently secured a new overall deal with FX Productions, is expected to develop new projects for the network, including additional seasons of “Shogun,” in collaboration with Kondo. These upcoming seasons are being developed in partnership with the estate of James Clavell, the author of the original book.
On Sunday, the show dominated the drama categories at the Golden Globes. In addition to Best Drama Series, “Shogun” earned awards for Best TV Drama Actor (Hiroyuki Sanada), Best TV Drama Actress (Anna Sawai), and Best TV Supporting Actor (Tadanobu Asano). The series had already set a remarkable record in September by winning 18 Emmy Awards, the most ever for a single season. This included top honors such as Best Drama Series and acting wins for Sanada and Sawai.
Originally conceived as a limited series, “Shogun” has enjoyed critical acclaim and success, prompting FX to consider it for a longer run. In May, Hiroyuki Sanada, who plays Lord Yoshii Toranaga, signed a deal to return for future seasons. FX also shifted the show into the drama categories for the 2024 Emmy Awards.
While FX has not yet formally renewed the series, a writers’ room began in the summer to plan for two more seasons of the historical epic. Fans are eager for updates as the production team nears the finish line for the next chapter.
