The highly anticipated second season of The Last of Us, the hit HBO series based on the video game, will debut in April, Sony confirmed on Monday during the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.
In addition to the season’s announcement, Sony officials revealed that Columbia Pictures, in collaboration with Sony PlayStation, is working on a movie adaptation of the popular video game Horizon Zero Dawn. Initially developed as a Netflix series, the project is now being reworked as a feature film. PlayStation Productions chief Asad Qizilbash confirmed that both Sony divisions are working together on the adaptation but did not provide further details.
Neil Druckmann, the head of Naughty Dog, the studio behind the original The Last of Us game, confirmed the April premiere for Season 2. He also shared a brief teaser during the presentation, offering fans a glimpse of returning characters Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey), as well as some new faces. The one-minute teaser, which was also posted on Max’s YouTube channel, shows brief flashes of the upcoming season, restating the April release date without specifying an exact day.
The teaser introduces Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, a key character from The Last of Us game series. In a tense moment, Abby, armed with a pistol, states, “It doesn’t matter if you have a code like me. There are just some things everyone agrees are just wrong.”
The official description for Season 2 reads: “Five years after the events of the first season, Joel and Ellie are drawn into conflict with each other and face a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than before.”
In other news, Sony also announced that Helldivers, a third-person shooter developed by Arrowhead Games, is being adapted into a feature film. The Helldivers franchise, known for its co-op gameplay, saw a massive surge in popularity with the release of Helldivers 2 in 2024. The sequel became one of PlayStation’s fastest-selling games, with 12 million copies sold within its first 12 weeks.
