The tenth season of “Love Island” reached its climax on Monday and ended with explosive controversies, missteps and side glances.
Over the past two months, a group of bombshells, dudes and babes have flocked to Mallorca hoping to find love on the ITV2 reality show. After weeks of fire pit parties, reunions, tears and passionate moments, and 58 days of sunny romance, the winner is finally crowned.
But the season ten finale was filled with missteps and tense moments as the losing contestant struggled to come to terms with the fact that he didn’t win, and seemed to be judging the happy couple who walked away with a prize.
Chaos ensued when the live finale aired Monday night — an episode that featured many bright spots and created must-see moments from the most unexpected corners. Viewers were baffled by a scene earlier in the finale, as the boys headed to the barber for a haircut before the finale.
But fans of the long-running ITV reality show are convinced the barbers featured on the show were extras – and they didn’t cut the lads’ hair at all. Many took to Twitter to slam what they saw as a production failure.
“Terek’s hair still looks the same, I said it, the barber did nothing,” one tweeted. Another agreed, tweeting: “Why do the lads all go to the barber shop and come out looking the same, no hair cut or beard cut, but tonight it’s all fresh trimmed! Ridiculous.”
The barbershop door incident was far from the only misstep of the night, with fans outraged when runners-up Whitney Adebayo and Lokan Nowacki missed ‘the best part’ in an epic defeat to react. Host Maya Jama chats with all the finalists and sits down with Whitney and Lokan to discuss their time on the show.
She then introduced the couple’s “Best Scene” – only to cut to a highlight reel of eventual winners Jesse Harding and Sammy Root. The blunder sparked a fan backlash, with one tweet saying: “Not that they played the wrong best part for Whitney & Loken,” while another predicted: “Today one of the producers People will be fired.”
And the final result also caused people’s dissatisfaction. Jess and Sammy beat bookmakers favorites Whitney and Lochan to claim the title and share the £50,000 prize. Tyrique Hyde and Ella Thomas were third, and Molly Marsh and Zachariah Noble were fourth.
Angry viewers slammed the result, with one person tweeting: “I can’t believe I watched 55 episodes of this God Forsaken show just to split 50,000 for these two losers…I ask for refund.”
Others threatened to boycott future seasons, with one fan dramatically tweeting: “Call OFO, call the police, call MI5, call the PM, call the King Calling Camilla as we just witnessed the biggest robbery in UK history on TV #LoveIsland. Never watch this stupid show again.”
It wasn’t just viewers who were upset, however, with many noticing that fellow contestants Tyreek and Zach were disappointed with the results. “Ty’s face…he has no expression #LoveIsland,” one attentive viewer tweeted, while another commented: “Zack is pissed #loveIsland.”
There have even been allegations that the entire season was fixed – as the results apparently leaked before Maya’s announcement. Loyal Love Island fans noticed that the winning couple usually stood to the left of the showrunners before being crowned.
So when Sammy and Jess appear to Maya’s left, they feel like the end result has been leaked.
In the final episode, Sammy expresses his love to Jesse and explains how Casa Amore secures his affection for her. He said: “It took some time at the beginning of my journey to realize what a risk I was taking, but when I saw you walking to the fire pit alone after Kasa, I knew right away that you were everything I wanted – My wandering eyes became my eyes on Jesse.”
